Where Does Good Health Come From?
Using Power Cooking & Air Fryers may help!
Just where does good health come from? Science tells us that some parts of the world are healthier than others due to the foods that are eaten. In Israel, we learn that a diet rich in vegetables, fish, and unsaturated fat helps people stay well. In Japan, we learn that the people eat until they are only 80 % full. In the Italian culture, the Mediterranean diet is looked to for attaining an ideal weight, higher energy levels, and to control inflammation. In America, we are fortunate to have a variety of fruits and vegetables available to us in any given season. Here are apples grown in Illinois used for both baking and eating.

The All American Apple
In recent months many people have looked to cooking foods in a variety of ways. The pressure cooker has evolved into the instant pots. They really are a wonder. As a long time user of the Old Fashioned Pressure cooker, I wondered how these might be different? Many people had suggested them to me and so I went out and purchased one for myself and my daughter.
I love the easiness of using them and the speed of delivering a great dinner in literally minutes. They are easy to clean, too! Hot sudsy water does the trick. Recipes are included with many of them but for me I find if I use my old recipes they still work well. With St. Patrick’s Day around the corner, you might try corned beef brisket. It turns out tender and oh, so yummy. Add in your potatoes and cabbage if you desire!
Another favorite recipe is for Beef Stew. Instant Pots are awesome. Enjoy!

ST PATRICK’S DAY
Another new invention are air fryers that make food taste fried without all the added grease. Cooking healthy and using some of the newest kitchen tools is great. One of my favorite people on U Tube is Chef AJ Her all vegetable approach to eating is most interesting. She is one of the people who is an advocate for using air fryers. Check out these appliances on Amazon and see if they might help you.
Perhaps it is little changes that we make and the extra steps we take toward being healthier that give us the confidence that we are helping control over our health.

How to Catch More Sleep
How to catch more sleep is unique for each person depending on their work cycle, but here are a few suggestions to help you.
What are your sleeping conditions? Are you in a quiet end of the house or in a nosy environment? If you grew up in a house with lots of noise and found that comforting, a quiet place may not work. A friend of mine sleeps with the radio on in the house. If you had a house of quiet, trying to find a place of rest that is peaceful, cool, and comfortable is essential. Scientific research tells us that going to bed at a regular time helps us stay regulated. However, having said that it is often difficult to be consistent. This is particularly true if you have small children, work varying shifts, or are a caretaker.
Often the use of noise machines work well. I spent a night with a few friends up in the Milwaukee area years ago. We were all going to a conference the next day and bunked over at one of the nearby homes as guests of one who was also attending with us. To my surprise she announced that the only way she could sleep was with white noise, so we all agreed to try it. Surprisingly fast, I fell asleep and slept well for the entire night. There are many machines that offer a variety of sounds from the sound of ocean waves, to repeated sounds.

Scheduling time for REST!
What we are learning is that it is essential we get up at the same time. Years ago I had a doctor who was practical and yet a genius. He sat down with me on the first visit in a quiet room and asked me a series of questions. One of them was what time I woke each day to use the restroom. I gave him a time and still find after all these years that it hasn’t changed. So why share this with you? Well it is obvious that we all seem to have an internal clock that keeps us on tract. Obviously after many years of schedule changes, having raised a family, and jobs, I realized that some things are consistent. This is really relevant when it comes to our times of rest.

Recognizing your Internal Clock
Yesterday I was not watching the clock, but Rosy, our American Bulldog, barked to alert me to her eating time. She has not been well this past month, and has not eaten well, but her habits are set in place. Ironically, I fed her and she ate okay. She also can be sound asleep and awakes at 8:30 pm to remind us it is time to go outside. People are no different with their internal clocks, but we often delay going to the washroom or ignore being tired. We stay up past our bedtimes and regret it the next morning.
The use of weighed blankets can also really be helpful. I was first taught about this through one of my patients. These blankets calm the body and allow the person to settle down. So I personally tried one to learn if it worked. They are excellent at keeping one from tossing and turning. It reminded me of the bundling we do in helping newborns to sleep. We swaddle them to make them feel secure. They come in a variety of weights according to whether one is a child or an adult. The first time I used one it slid onto the floor and unlike other blankets meant I had to get out of bed to physically pick it up again. I found it rather funny, but missed it right away. These blankets come in a variety of colors and duvets are available to cover them as well.

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away”
Another remedy is having something about an hour and a half before bedtime to relax you. For years a glass full of milk was suggested and it has helped many people I know to feel satiated and to sleep well. My husband likes an apple and has copied this habit from his father. Perhaps it is keeping the body from feeling hungry at that time, equalizing blood sugar, or just a powerful suggestion! It may be something to try and see if it helps you.
Hoping a few of these ideas might guide you into a restful night and consistent habits to make your life better. Take the first step, it may put you on the escalator of success.

Rising to the TOP
Rising to the Top
Growth is ongoing and can be fun in the process. Not everything we do in life is easy. We become the best version of ourselves with practice and setting ourselves up for success. We develop levels of competency, levels of understanding, and in our approaches to tackling change.
We do know that changes can be hard. They can also be fun and allow us avenues for meeting new friends, colleagues, and neighbors. At Delight in Living, you are encouraged to like yourself and reach for the stars. We walk the journey with you for support. We want you to succeed at every level. Rising to the top is easy when a person voluntarily makes changes. It is when we are forced to make changes that we rebel and feel victimized.
You are unique like this brick layered support beam! You are strong, stylish and can achieve height in your endeavors. Taking one day at a time allows you to be stunning in all that you do. It gives you time to level up in your education. Each course you take, every time you teach yourself something new, you are leveling up and creating portable equity.

Encouragement!
Portable equity goes with you forever. It is the reputation you create. It is the resume of skills, education, and knowledge you have within you that can be applied to everything you do. For me, I am an organizer; it is easy for me to create systems and evaluate on the spot the discrepancies in being efficient. It was something that I began training for in college. I worked for a professor who was absent minded. He would misplace everything and make it difficult for the graduate students who needed him to sign off on projects. Within 2 to 4 weeks, I had his office organized with systems that he could follow. I recall finding 2, 3, and 4 copies of dissertations that students had turned in because he kept losing them. I put order to the chaos in the office. Those skills multiplied as I taught school, worked in offices, and carried me into my own counseling and teaching practices.
You too have skills that are portable. Make a list now of the ones that you own and let them start working for you. Are you a fast learner? Are you super coordinated? Do you comprehend facts quickly? Are you bilingual? Do you understand other people with compassion and clarity? Are you a communicator? A great listener? Are you easy going when things get stressful? Flexible when changes need to be made? A faith filled person who helps others feel better?

Leveling up can have a style of its own!
These are all steps to Rising to the Top! Take the first step forward, it may put you on the escalator of success.
The Advice is Simple; Taking Action is Hard
Today’s message is The Advice is Simple; Taking Action is Hard. If you follow me regularly at the Mini Miracles from Minor Moments Podcast or read my blogs, you know that I follow Mel Robbins. She is the Author of The 5 Second Rule. So I was listening to one of her talks on U-Tube today https://youtu.be/JoQEY2sIMTg. She discusses how we tend to act on our feelings as opposed to doing what we need to do. For example: we all know we are to exercise, but it is easy to say, “I don’t feel like it!”
Our lead photo is a child all bundled up for an outing. Parents obviously dressed her appropriately for the weather. She may not have wanted to go out, but there was no option. There is no one to dress or control you except yourself. You have to take action even if you don’t feel like it.
Self discipline is very easy for some people, because they prioritize what is important and then create habits to pursue what they want. They write lists and check off their progress. They set deadlines that help them accomplish goals. Often we are so good at helping others attain what they want, but we get caught in the trap of not getting what we want. I can attest to that as a caretaker. Caretakers are often teachers, counselors, and/or parents. I fall into all three categories. I have learned to put myself last. It is not a good thing!
Self awareness is very important. We all need to help ourselves. We need to “parent ourselves!” Today put yourself first. Do something you need to do for yourself. Many people are snowed in during this cold snap. It provides time to read, exercise, or clean out that cabinet that needs to be organized. You may not feel like it, but do it anyway. Parent yourself and take ownership of who and what you want. No one is going to give you a gold star or an award, but you’ll feel so much better. Check out Brendan Burchard here. Brendan is the High Performance Coach and inspires us to get results.

The Best is Yet to Come

The Best is Yet to Come!
Yes, the Best is Yet to Come. Rosy turns 11 in March and has been fighting congestive heart failure the last 2-3 weeks. Medicine has been helping her respiration and a modest diet has helped her rally around. The extremely cold weather makes her rush in and out quickly, but it is more often than normal.
Today as I was preparing her food, I reached over to hand her the medications in a small ball of peanut butter. She accepted it graciously. I found myself saying, “The best is yet to come!” On the counter was her breakfast which was dog food and a scrambled egg to entice her to eat.

At 10 she is still fond of tossing and playing with her toys. She does not destroy them, but seems to know they are for fun.
The best is yet to come is advice I needed to hear lately too. It seems that when things are going wrong, this mantra really helps. It extends to a way of thinking that has served me well over the years. Sometimes the advice we give to others is really for ourselves, so I have learned to key into that insight.
As a student, I would do my homework and know the reward was in knowing the material. That would usually result in good grades. If I did my chores, it meant time out to play. The reward would be as a result of the effort. As an adult I need to start flipping this a bit. I need to play more and recognize that much of the hard work has already been done in some areas.
Somehow we’d all like the prize before putting in the work. We’d rather weigh less, but still eat out of control. We’d like to have the good things in life like a new car, but aren’t patient enough to wait and save for it. As I get older, waiting is even harder.
Here it is winter and very cold this week. Below zero! I am totally impatient to get outside into our garden den and soak up the sunshine. I’d love to be shedding the coats and added sweaters! I’d love to walk safely without the concern of falling on ice or freezing. I see friends traveling and think I’d like to be joining them, but realize reality doesn’t allow that right now.
Where are you in this thinking? Do you believe the best is yet to come? What are you doing that will lead you to the big payoff? Are you dieting? Exercising? Working on a project with a long term goal that will pay you dividends? Are you saving money for a trip? Are you waiting for the joys of seeing a new grandchild? Or perhaps getting in that garden with all the baby plants from your seedlings?
The best part of winter for me used to be ice skating. I no longer do that, but realize that winter if the prerequisite of Spring days and more light. “The best is yet to come!”
